If you are someone who loves to have ear curations or wants to try different ear piercing combos, then this piercing is definitely for you and will add elegance to your appearance.

Rook piercing is an inner-ear piercing on the upper ridge area placed above the tragus in the antihelix area. It is the more unusual, versatile and subtle piercing that gives you a fresh look—also becoming one of the popular trends. Keep reading to know more about rook piercing.

Usually, Rook piercings are of two types:

  1. Faux Rook Piercing

It is placed slightly above the ridge of the inner area horizontally. Like traditional piercing, this piercing enters the front of the ear and exits from the back. Thus, instead of a curved barbell, your piercer will use a straight one to get it done. It is slightly different from the standard rook piercing as in standard rook piercing; you can see the entire jewellery and have the same entry and exit points.

2. DOUBLE ROOK PIERCING

To make your rook piercing edgier, you can have a double rook piercing. As the name suggests, this type of piercing is done by piercing two holes instead of one. Thus, creating a symmetrical and visually alluring appearance. This piercing is the best for those who wanted to have multiple earrings on their rook. You can style this piercing with variety of jewellery option from dainty studs to classic hoops.

Procedure

The procedure starts with finding a reputable piercer with professional experience and a hygienic environment. Once you find out your piercer, you make an appointment, and on that day, your piercer will determine the structure of the ear. As the anatomy of the ear is different from person to person, your piercer will make sure you are good to go with ear piercing.

After examination, your piercer will recommend you a piece of jewellery to have for your piercing. Your piercer will mark the spot where they have to do the piercing and ask if you are fine with it. Before getting pierced, your piercer will clean your ear with any solution that will make the area bacteria-free.

Always ensure your piercer doesn’t use a gun, as these guns are unsafe. Professional piercers will always use a hollow needle that will be discarded after every use.

By using a needle, your piercer will make a hole for a rook and insert a piece of jewellery into it. However, making a hole will be so quick that you don’t even know, but during the process of inserting jewellery, you can feel a sharp pain and pressure. After getting it done, your piercer instructs you not to change the initial jewellery before it heals properly.

Pain and Healing Time

Pain is the primary concern when you go for a piercing. Rook piercing is quite painful. If we measure the level of pain, then it’s 6/10. The reason for this is that the area where this piercing is done has a thick cartilage layer, making it more painful. Moreover, you can feel throbbing pain soon after you get your piercing, which lasts for a few days as the area accepts the changes. Besides this, you can have sleepless nights due to the pain and are not allowed to sleep on the same side where you have the piercing until it heals properly.

This piercing needs more time to heal for the same reason mentioned above (thicker cartilage), i.e. six to twelve months. However, healing time also depends on how you care for the piercing.

Complications

As rook piercing is done on the cartilage, which is harder to pierce, It increases the risk of catching the infection. Following complications can occur while doing rook piercing.

  • Infection: Not every swelling is infectious. If you feel extreme pain even after a few days of getting pierced or find pus around the area, there is a high chance of infection. If the infection occurs, don’t remove the jewellery yourself; seek medical help. Moreover, this can also lead to permanent deformity of the tissue, so it’s essential to always go to a professional piercer.
  • Bumps

It’s common in cartilage piercing that your piercing area may develop a bump after the piercing. The bumps can be of the following types

  • Piercing pimple
  • Keloid scar
  • Infection bubble

You can figure out if the bump can cause complications and talk to your piercer as soon as you experience it.
